5th Sunday of Easter – John 14:1-14

Need to Know

  1. It’s a complicated, theoretical passage (listening to it, I tend to switch off).  What stories might you tell to help those of us with short concentration spans ‘get into’ this passage?
  2. Michael Ramsey famously said that ‘God is Christlike and in him is no unChristlikeness at all’.  So where is the Holy Spirit in this passage?
  3. Does this passage say anything to those doing exams this coming week?

Need to Challenge

  1. Believe is a key word. Is believe a ‘doing’ word or a ‘being’ word?
  2. Might we dare do the challenge Jesus sets and actually ask for what we really, really want?
  3. ‘No-one comes to the Father except through me’. What do we know about this Fathering because of Jesus?

Need to Comfort

  1. Having problems believing all the stuff Christians say? Jesus might help – see verse 11
  2. There are ‘many’ dwelling places in the Father’s house. Jesus is preparing a place for ‘you’. What might he be getting ready for you?
  3. ‘From now on you do know him and have seen him.’ Is this a ‘given’ or is belief needed?
